Tell Me What They Want (What They Really, Really Want)
Misconceptions about the value older Americans place on vision care
VSP Releases Medicare Vision Insights Report
Time and time again, research shows that older Americans value their vision significantly more than the other four senses. One survey revealed that 70% of Americans aged 55 and older said they’d miss their vision if they lost it.1 The next highest ranked sense was hearing, with only 7% of respondents saying they’d miss it. This may be because senior citizens associate having healthy vision with high quality of life and their ability to maintain their independence.2
And yet there are still some managed care plan executives who mistakenly believe that “(Vision coverage) is not...important to most people…unless you have a specific problem.”3
This is one of four misconceptions uncovered in the 2025 Medicare Vision Insights Report about the value Medicare Advantage (MA) beneficiaries place on vision coverage.
The report, conducted by VSP® Vision Care in partnership with research firm Advisory Board, dives into these misconceptions and delivers practical suggestions for how health plans can better structure and promote their vision benefit offerings to help increase market share, decrease costs, and improve member health.
